Well, it's mostly because of how unique it is. Machi tells the story of eight different characters through 5 or 3 days in their lives, each character has it's own story completely unrelated to the others (in 428, Machi spiritual, successor, all the characters are related to a bigger plot). The thing is that these eight stories happen simultaneously, so the characters will cross paths between them, and your decisions with one character might affect another one later (Machi has about 122 bad endings), that's why they named the PSP version "The Intersection of Fate".

As I wrote before, the stories are pretty different and the tone in them too. One of them is about an otaku detective that finds messages from a terrorist that wants to put a bomb in Shibuya and another story is about a girl that wants to lose weight.

Machi and 428 are really unique experiences, but you'll have to try them to see how good they are.

I finished this game 2 years ago. And yes, it uses still pictures and FMV in some places to tell the story. In order to progress in the game each character have to help another in some way. 428 in Wii/PS3/PSP/I-devices is a spiritual sequel, the main difference with Machi is that all the characters are tied to a main story, in Machi every character has his own story.
