I honestly think Generations is the best Monster Hunter. I will always hold a candle for the original, it's wacky control scheme and being the kind of crazy game it was at the time but I know I'll never play it again. Generations gave me Forest and Hills back though along with a truckload of content. I feel it's the best mix of sanding off the rough edges of the earlier games while essentially keeping the same feel before the series transitioned into Rise and World.

If GTA being popular didn't affect me, why should I care? Zelda is popular and I don't care about it either, but what dies that matter? It's not like 6th gen wasn't packed with other amazing games to play. I also disagree with the general notion that games are crap now compared to then. In my experience ever since I had an Atari and every year since it's always been mostly mediocre games with the odd amazing ones.

>microwave versus going out into the woods, hunting for meat, foraging for herbs and mushrooms, then building your own fire to cook it. It's way more grueling and uncomfortable to do, but it just feels so much more fucking real.

If you haven't, I recommend trying the original Monster Hunter. They lessened that aspect bit by bit with each new game, but especially in the first one you literally do all that. If you want a steak to keep your stamina up, you have to go kill a dinosaur, cut a hunk of meat off it then cook it for the right amount of time so it's not undercooked or burnt. It's also got a unique and wonderful control scheme that they totally ditched after that. Beautiful game.

But it's Monster Hunter by a landslide.

Monster Hunter PS2 was unironically like this for me. The control scheme takes some real getting used to and I remember in the beginning I could barely hit a velociprey or kelbi let alone fight the real monsters. But as I learned it better the system quickly became one of my favorites of all time and MH one of my favorite games of all time. I maxed the clock at 999 hours long long before I was done playing it.

Most fighting games are likely a little like that for beginners as well. Also roguelikes, your first few stabs at Nethack can feel brutal.

It's not technically prehistoric but in Monster Hunter you're pretty much a samurai caveman who goes around killing dinosaurs. It's also awesome.

Jurassic Park games on Genesis are good and you can run around as the raptor causing havoc to humans.

The Ecco the Dolphin games also have prehistoric segments.
