The only thing redeeming about the Cleric is his flechettes which release the poison cloud, I mean these stunlock the hell out of centaurs, but you can be hit by it too. His flaming glove shit sucks, the wraithverge is overrated (and expensive), and the mace is like the fighter's punch. The poison staff is okay but at some point you will run out of that blue mana and be forced to use that stupid fucking glove.

Mage stuff is okay but the Bloodscourge is underpowered and sad. It has seeker projectiles which is the only thing good about it. And like someone mentioned the Centaurs will deflect most of his projectiles.

His flechettes are awful too, practically useless. At least the fighter can toss a bunch of them and they explode, the mage just drops them on the ground and they're timebombs.

The fighter's hammer can at least hit fuckers up close even if its out of mana. And the Quietus does 500 damage per attack, not my problem if you're not able to land all of them.

The Axe can hit without mana too for that fact, it just does more if it has mana. The Axe is about the only weak point in his arsenal because its more dakka of what his fist already is, it doesnt do anything else like toss spectral throwing axes (it woulda been great to duplicate that from the axe knights in heretic). However the effect this has is when you finally see that Hammer you suddenly cream in your pants.

MFW if Ranger was in Hexen he would be a Fighter. He already knows how to use an Axe, and is proficient with grenade (flechette) use.

Also whenever you go to research alien weapons always research their Grenades, and the Weapons themselves first. Even though you cant "use" the ammo, if you capture a gun in the field you can pick it up and fire it anyway.

But the main key to succeeding in xcom is using HWP. They cost 10 times as much as a soldier and take up alot of storage space, but they can usually tank (pun) at least 2 hits from enemies. And they cannot be zombified. And they cannot be mind controlled or panicked.

Bring 2 Tanks with you on each mission, fill the rest of the transport with soldiers (6). Use the tanks to scout out where enemies are located, including provoking reaction fire if you must just to get them to give up their position.

Have 1 soldier armed to the gills with grenades. He throws grenades at enemies which are spotted. Think command & conquer level of grenade soldier effectiveness here. It has limitations but this is the BEST starting weapon you can have (that soldier can easily score 2, 3, 4 kills in a mission). Timer set to 0 tics and if the alien cant reaction fire to him, its pretty much history.

Have someone provoke its reaction fire. Have someone else shoot it (sonic cannon, or 3burst from gauss rifle please). Now shoot it with a stun launcher (or lance it with the tazer).

In enemy base attacks the 2nd stage has most of them wielding stun launchers anyway. Its real easy to get them to blast themselves with it.

Snot a problem round 3 is so fucking unfair and tedious its baffling.

The more I play EWJ the more I feel everything aside from the look and music was an oversight. There is so much design problem at every corner that stray the game away from whats actually fun (jumping, shooting or swinging on hooks). The only level I didnt have a too much problem with were New Junk, Heck, the Lab and For Petes Sake. I just wish the entire game was new junk with progressing difficulty and gimmick instead of padding hurtbox at every corner of the levels.
