Because the expensive DAC chip used to convert the digital port signal to component was built INTO the cable, thus making it next to impossible for clone cables to even be considered.

But yeah, ocassionally a deal on one of the cables can show up. I got the D-Terminal Cable for 110 and a D-Terminal to Component adaptor from Solaris for like 10 or 15.

For me it was worth both the decent improvement on GC games over the Wii, along with being the ONLY option for GBC/GBA games (GameBoy Player), and the usefulness of having a separte video input+settings for convenience.
