I REALLY did NOT like this game. It actually had a huge following in the US apparently but several romhacks, I can't understand why besides the fact it's one of the few JRPGs we actually got on NES.

The sequel is better in every way though, you might want to give that a try. If you're bothered by the slow walk speed know that you'll get an item to run afterwards.

I've started playing the sequel and it's a far better game.

Regarding the walking speed, you do get an item rather early on that increases it. However, battle speed is indeed slower and there is no remedying that (though you tend to deal more dmg so it doesn't take as many hits to finish a fight)

At first the difficulty is braindead easy but after a while the fights start getting interesting. Most notably you can change the position of the characters from bottom/middle/front which drastically alters things.

The best thing about the game is probably the graphics and especially the dungeons which are varied and look really great, pic related. In the first game you had the same two sets of graphics (town and cave) throughout the ENTIRE game only with pal swaps....

About music, the difference in style between the first and second game is typical of earlier/later NES Capcom games (think Duck Tales or Mega Man), the first game has more catchy tunes, but the second has more moody tunes that fit their environment better.

Also the game is more story-focused with actual cutscenes and even bringing the battle phase into the story.
