I switched frequently, yeah, and I don't think there's any harm in it battlewise. It just gets frustrating from a story standpoint that there's so many characters that you always feel like you're missing out unique dialogue. Although I suppose if you're playing on an emulator it makes it easier to save and reload to see whether a particular dialogue tree plays out differently.

Re: your second question, I'll let someone who's played it more recently/has a better memory than me answer that, I have no idea.
