One of the best /vr/ games ever made. Atmosphere and ambience alone was nailed so hard. This games world feels more alive than games that have come out decades after. Sadly due to YouTubers its reputation has been unfairly diminished.

>Crash Bandicoot literally rips off Donkey Kong Country gameplay
>DK64 plays completely different from both
Do you think that DK64 would be better off as a DKC/Crash style game? Rare already had Banjo as a big open levels collectathon.

The hatred for DK64 is unfounded. A lot of it comes down to a lack of understanding of how 100% completion works in the game.

People think you HAVE to get all 100 bananas for all 5 characters in each level. You don't. Only 75% of them per character per level.

Oh no there's too many things to do in the levels and they're too big.

Having such a big open world and so many things to do was unheard of on the N64 back in 1999. It was such a huge deal for a kid with ADHD from back then, you have no idea.

Another N64 example:
There's no scene where what is portrayed on the cover actually happens. There are minecart levels but you never get to play as more than 1 Kong and you never see K.Rool in-game until the bossfight (which is not a minecart level) outside of cutscenes.
I understand the devs wanted to make a cool cover that is representative of the game and not 100% picture perfect (ie screenshots) but if a scene is shown on the cover, is it actually representative of the game or is that false advertising?

For me it's DK64. I think I love it for the reasons that other people hate it - it's the only 3D platformer that really challenges me or has any weight to it, every other game in the genre feels like it's over way too quickly. Then again, I'm not sure how hated that game really is outside of the more dedicated retro community. I'd reckon it's not as hated by casual fans.

>>9249963
I remember this one, too. Not the best game ever but certainly worth a rental. I'll say it's unique if nothing else.

This shit pisses me off. Has there EVER been another game that had to correct a game-breaking bug with a hardware add-on? Not to mention Nintendo's false advertising about it making the system more powerful when its just adding 4MB of RAM.

The worst part is it costs $60 these days and its required to play only like 3 games, but one of those games is Majora's Mask.

>Japanese and American audiences experience real Eurojank (but in 3D) for the first time

It was genuinely a cultural milestone.

The game is good. People who bitch about this and say it's a horrible game are dorks, and I'm going to fuck their mom. I'd better not catch you saying that shit unless it's a joke (I like jokes).

How come this game's reception suddenly 180'd in the following years? It feels like once the mid 2010s went along it has become almost a sin to enjoy any element of it.

It blows my mind that anyone still likes this game. It's a complete betrayal of the SNES trilogy and the absolute nadir of 90's 3D platformer design. A closer 3D adaptation could have been something like Crash Bandicoot, with the Kongs racing through more linear levels full of action packed traps and set pieces, but instead we get another collect-a-thon in the exact style of Banjo Kazooie where life-or-death difficulty is replaced by checklists of collectable items. Rare made the huge number of pickups that count toward the completion percentage a huge selling point, justifying the literal system expansion pack by claiming this was a bigger game than anything before, it was one of the game's biggest selling points, but the final product is a giant segmented mess that when it doesn't feel like mindless busywork, becomes a tedious nightmare.

The game has extremely shallow player physics. Unlike Mario 64, where Mario has multiple different jumps that can be chained together to build momentum, every move in DK64 is flat and lifeless, and with the plain level design, there are rarely moments where you can use the character moments to cut corners or find shortcuts (or do anything other than move from point A to B). The game gives you a bunch of special moves and weapons, but none of them add anything to gameplay other than the most basic pattern matching. The gun is for shooting matching switches and specific enemies only it can kill. The grenades are for killing specific enemies immune to everything else. The instruments are basic screen-wipe bombs that are also just used for pressing switches. The individual kong special attacks are pretty much all contained to their own specific areas and switches as well. With 5 different characters, you end up doing a TON of backtracking that is completely unavoidable.

Generic answer but this is by far the worst. It’s funny because it has everything stacked for it. It’s got great graphics, music, tight controls, diverse gameplay, the world is full of life and you can tell they poured loads of time and effort into it, but it fails in the biggest possible manner in the gameplay department. It’s not fun to play. It’s the perfect example of ‘more does not mean better’. The whole thing would be eons more fun if they didn’t do stupid shit like limit bananas to each Kong or have massive sprawling levels that force you to constantly backtrack just to grab another stupid trinket to open another door to go to another area. I enjoyed myself playing this at first, and by the time I got to Fungi Forest I absolutely just couldn’t stand it any longer. Only powered through just to say yeah I’ve beaten it 100%. Best collectathon is probably fucking Jak and Daxter or some shit, I don’t know

If people hate it nowadays (I know it's often considered a game where you collect stuff for the sake of it), why did people love it back in 1999? It was one of the highest selling games on the system

Beat pic related last night.

I don't get the hate. It still holds up, it's fun and for the value it's a great buy - especially back then.

Not only are you getting a 25-hour adventure, but you're getting a multi-player game and two additional games in Donkey Kong and Jetpac

There are frustrating things like the camera and some control issues like Diddy's rocketpack but they're easy to look over with enough persistence.
