For anyone genuinely interested in the history of Rogue and roguelikes, what kinds of games they were inspired by and what they inspired I again recommend the excellent episode on Roguelike Radio which is hosted by some of the most knowledgeable people anywhere on this amazing genre.

I can vouch for Powder being pretty great. It's among my favorite roguelikes because it's fairly short like Rogue. Just get to the 25th floor, gank Beealzebub and get out again. A full game is 5-10 hours, so even when you die late game it's not a huge loss. It's complex enough to be very interesting with a lot going on, but doesn't feel bloated. It was originally made for GBA but has been ported a few places, I play it on PSP and my phone mostly.

>However, the latest Version had no downloadable build on the author's website.

Really? I wonder if he took it down. The PSP version is mostly what I've played but the version is old. It's from before he released it on mobile platforms. So it's possible when he did that he took down some other older ones I guess.

I find PMD cuts too much of what makes Roguelikes interesting so a lot of the game feels like a slog to me. Etrian Mystery Dungeon was pretty good, but the original Shiren the Wanderer hits a real sweet spot. It has just enough persistence that it can give a sense of progression and making beating an initial run easier. But a normal playthrough without maxed weapons and a stockpile of items is quite challenging.

I also like that a successful game is also only a few hours long which means that failing a run (which will happen a lot) isn't a huge loss. And encourages the player to just try again and modify their approach some.

It's one of the things some of the big roguelikes miss a sometimes that's part of what I liked about the original. Powder, my possible favorite roguelike is like this as well.

lol I don't think you're all that familiar with roguelikes, especially streamlined ones like Powder. A good roguelike is designed to always keep you moving and trying to grind will almost always fuck you over. Powder in particular. It's much easier to win at a low level than a high one.

Also I do like EO, but in the grind late game to incorporate new classes or readjust for misplaced points on skills you hoped would be better gets to be a real chore. There were times I played several whole games of Powder while my party in EO auto-walked around in circles grinding to just get back to the level I was before. At that point I start to wonder why I'm bothering.

You don't have to like Powder or roguelikes though, that's kind of my whole point.

I'm obsessed with Powder as well, I ship it here all the time. Actually one of my favorites ever. Also fairly streamlined, but I don't see that as a bad thing these days. And that gods system is so much fun.

I play on PSP, but it should run on about anything. It was made for GBA after all.
