That was always confusing, but if you look at Arc Impulse it actually turns red so it seems they're just using that triple tech

My favorite party has always been Crono, Marle, and Frog. Marle works well enough and has some cool combo techs with the team (Double Cure, Arc Impulse). I like that Marle starts off faster than Robo and Lucca, less waiting to attack. Speed tabs get rid of that issue eventually of course.

Phantasy Star IV is one of my favorite games, but I think it's the other way around. The combos in CT are more useful and they way they work with ATB is a lot more interesting.
