I know this is something that will be hard to believe today, but when I was first getting into the CRT scene aperture grille was considered the worst possible screen type. Specifically on the Build Your Own Arcade Controls forum. Everyone there was into old arcade monitors that used dot triads and thought the aperture grille displays did not blend pixels well enough leading to harsh looking and flat graphics.

But eventually a few people started to realize how common and inexpensive the PVMs in particular were (in 2007 you could buy 20 of them at an auction for $100) and how convenient they were to set up compared to an arcade monitor. People started using AdvanceMAME, Soft15khz, and later GroovyMAME to play in native resolution. Then people like me and a few others started posting on the monitor forum over there (and similar things were going on at neo-geo.com and system 11) telling new users to just get a PVM and that's how this all got started.
