So, /vr/, did we ever reach a consensus on which is the best classic Paper Mario game? The only true options are the N64 original or the Thousand Year Door, so which is your pick and why?

I played both upon release, and I wanted to give TYD the edge for its more interesting characters, locations, and tone, but after replaying them both within the last year, I was dead fucking wrong; the original, despite being a simpler, easier, and arguably somewhat bland game is still a way better experience, and that's mostly just because TYD fucks everything up with a ton of backtracking, too much dialogue, and just generally awful pacing all-around. Plus, they use the dialogue and backtracking in hopes of hiding the fact that most of the "dungeons" are stupidly one-dimensional, and two chapters (3 and 6) don't even have proper dungeons, they package a bunch of jibber-jabber and repetitive battles and pray that you're distracted enough not to notice you didn't really fucking do anything for the entire chapter. Bad form.

It really sucks, because TYD was properly ambitious, did a good job of upgrading the battle system, and had all the ingredients to be a perfect adventure, but the execution was just lazy, and now that I'm older, it's shamefully obvious. I was really excited to replay it for the first time in 16 years, but it let me down. The original, on the other hand, was a charming, simple adventure that didn't overstay its welcome.

What's the appeal? It's always felt like "Baby's First RPG" to me.

So what's the best way to play the original Paper Mario now that the Wii e-shop is gone?
