This is the issue.

I used RetroRGB's original mod guide, which suggested slotting the resistors vertically between the mainboard and the underside of the RGB amp chip (which I soldered to a little SMD circuit board off ebay). Unfortunately I had no electrical tape on hand to insulate the underside of the board, to put it flush with the SNES mainboard. Instead I used a little cube of polystyrene that the amp came packaged in to insulate, but made the cube too big. Soldering the resistors with that much vertical distance left the leads way too long, so they bucked as shown here when I was reassembling the SNES. Also I think the board+polystyrene shifted making the thing all the more precarious.

I'm amazed they haven't shorted.
Also I used multicore wire. Thick stuff too, making me even more afraid to open the thing back up. Shame too because SNES was in great condition; I'll probably have to crack it open, unsolder and resolder everything with monocore wrapping wire at some point.

Most eBay sellers don't take good enough pictures to tell 1chip from another and it's more expensive importing an original SNES than a mini. Generally it's just not worth the risk.
Also I like the mini more than the American SNES. The Japanese/PAL SNES design looks even nicer but my entire game collection is imported NTSC-U stuff so modding my childhood Ausfag SNES or an SFC would be an even bigger pain.
