Yet another run through DoS FFII. This time, everyone's an archer, sittin in the back and leaning super heavy on buffs and debuffs. Turning enemies into toads, poisoning them and then sucking their MP out as they die is great. God I love this game.

Final Fantasy II is actually quite open world, especially for a JRPG. You have free reign over most of the world map right away, the only thing stopping you from exploring it is the strength of the monsters. But if you want to keep running from battles and hoping, you can go straight to the last town in the game if you want.

It was an amazingly forward thinking game for it's time, with a really interesting leveling system.

Well! It's good to see that the people putting it down really are just crazy outliers who couldn't get over the controls having their own feel. Game is fucking awesome.

My other one would be FFII which does at least get a little more love these days than it used to. But is still generally considered one of the worst. I feel the opposite though.

The PSP and GBA versions of II are the only two really good ones. The original was broken to an almost unplayable degree and the PSX port of it is slow and buggy as all hell.

FFII is a very weird game. But it's also one of the most satisfying Final Fantasies if you pay it right.

The problem with the game is that it's extremely easy to cheat the system and make your party godly powerful within the first hour or two of playing. However if you do that, it makes the entire game a boring, pointless slog.

What you want to do is at the beginning of the game decide how you want to build your characters. If you want someone to be good at using magic, start them using magic right from the start.

That way, every battle you get into becomes important. The only way to build MP and spell power is by using them, etc. It's actually one of my favorite games in the whole series.

Which retro RPG has the best turn-based combat system?

My vote goes to either Pokemon or Chrono Trigger.
