Yeah it's a lot easier than the first game, but the respawn balloon is good if you have into consideration many people played these games with their little siblings that weren't very good at games. It helped keep the pacing, without resorting to bullshit like Tails on Sonic 2.
One thing I particularly love about these games are the amount of animation frames they have, it's fun pausing the game and seeing the different animations, they obviously also change depending on the suit you're wearing.
