In the GBA version they really buffed all the other characters up so much that the classic end-game party was actually quite weak.

In the DS version you can customize your end game party to have all of your old party members abilities. So Edge actually becomes somewhat useful when hes sitting there tossing out Blessing, then playing Edward Songs.
