The Dreamcast has no copy protection either, so there's no reason to mod it for that purpose either. When you select games to burn for the Dreamcast, you need to use CDI format games as GD-Roms held slightly more data, but most games didn't use the extra storage. The only game that I know of that can't be burned on a CD-R is Omikron the Nomad Soul.

The only CD based Sega console that had copy protection was the Saturn, and you can get an all-in-one PseudoSaturn cartridge that bypasses that as well.

Anyone know if the pseudo-saturn cart works with a burned copy of Resident Evil? I'm having a tough time interpreting the compatibility chart...

If you want original hardware on a TV, the cheapest solution is pic related and a bunch of CD-Rs. Get the cart that has the 1mb/4mb ram and 8mb of save ram. The cart also disables region lock and anti-piracy checks. It was the method I used until I bought a MODE.

Original hardware modded to play backups is the way forward for me. I like the feeling of the original controllers and although I don't have a CRT I really fucking want one so I can use my light gun!

I just ordered one of these yesterday, it's a relatively recently made Chinese cartridge that provides Pseudo Saturn (ability to play burned games + games from other regions), 1MB ram expansion, 4MB ram expansion, and 8MB of save data storage. It lets you toggle between the different modes with a physical switch. I paid $52 for it on ebay, I think the seller is out of stock right now though.
People say that putting third-party carts in your Saturn(especially taking them out and putting them in again frequently) will ruin your cartridge slot, so I splurged a bit on the one with all the features because it means I'll never have to take it out of the system again.

Get one of these:

I have one and it's pretty handy.

Games:
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Policenauts w/ English patch

Virtua Fighter, and give the original version a shot before trying Remix. It has that super polygonal cyber look to it that deserves more appreciation.

Play >>5036584 with your friends. Show them how COOL the Saturn was.

If you want to try to navigate an untranslated J-ARPG, Princess Crown is George Kamitami's precursor to such games as Odin Sphere and Dragon Crown. Try to find Andriasang's translation guide or wait for cyberwarriorx's patch.
