Start over if you're really stuck. Although you can definitely finsh the game if you really, really want to.
The game was probably partially intended to be played over if you didn't make it the first time.
You'll also be surprised at how quickly you'll get back to where you left off, once you know the layout and roughly where the items are, you can really run through quickly.
Where are you up to so far? Also as a small tip, try to search drawers etc for ammunition, you'll often find extra handgun or shotgun ammo lying around. There's more than you might initially think.
Secondly, don't attempt to kill every zombie if you can avoid them easily. If it's a hallway you think you'll be using a lot, then clear them out. If you can circumvent the hallway by going a different route, sometimes it's worth ignoring them and saving the ammo.

I still like RE1 more than both of them, although they're all good in their own way.
REmake felt too heavy handed for me, with things like the coffin on the ceiling, the house looking so decrepit, and the lab looking so dirty and spooky. I liked RE1 having a clean/lived in mansion that was mysteriously abandoned, and the lab looking like it was a real clinical, clean, efficient lab.
RE1 also had the weird religious connections at the end, finding the bible verses about eternal life, and the Adam and Eve painting.

I've been playing through these, some for the first time lately and they're fantastic titles.
What's your favourite of the classic RE games? Favourite moments or monsters? Favourite versions?

I haven't actually played REmake yet, I ignored people who told me to 'skip the original' as I generally like playing the original game where possible unless it's deeply flawed in some way.
Glad I did, as I thought it was fantastic, as you said, it definitely feels very pure and focused.

On a similar note, I didn't get the hate for tank controls, and especially don't get the hate now. The game uses set camera angles, it feels like the best way of doing it. I never found it particularly hard to control either, maybe just how people's brains are wired differently.

Not having auto-aim definitely adds to the fear factor, and it really made me plan and think about my battles a lot more carefully than later entries.
When fighting Hunters for example I would wait until I could 'surprise' them from around a corner, or at least get them all in front of me, since getting surrounded was basically death.
It also becomes apparent that sometimes your best option is to just run and not fight. The mansion also allows you to avoid certain hallways too, so I'd try to 'skip' some Hunters and only fight when I absolutely needed to.

On a semi related note, I know Chris has more health than Jill, but was he faster as well? I read he was but don't recall if I noticed the difference straight away.
