>It was completely mediocre. Failed to sell in meaningful amounts and contributed to the sinking of the Star Fox brand.
It sold well enough, more than a million in the US, and was the best-selling GCN game in Japan when it released. What do you mean by "sinking of the Star Fox brand"? The series has had many games since. I understand that many think the series has had a definite decline in quality after SF64 and that they should just do SF64 again but better in whatever vague manner, but attributing that to some supposed permanent damage done by SFA just seems unwarranted. Star Fox was a good on-rails shooter, SF64 added to the gameplay of that with all-range mode, and where do you take the series after that? This is just how Nintendo functions, they don't do the same game twice. SFA didn't have anything to do with that.
>A: Rare should not have been making Action/Adventure games after the clear failure of Project Dream
I don't think it's so easy to say Project Dream was a failure when the game never released in that form.
B: Miyamoto should not have been foisting off Nintendo IPs onto devs that had no attachment to them and were clearly making a game that had nothing to do with that IP.
I see no issue with Nintendo trying new things with their IPs. Metroid Prime turned out great and SFA was fun, and it didn't turn Star Fox into an adventure game series or anything. If anything I think it had a positive effect on Dinosaur Planet. From what we know of the pre-Star Fox game it looks pretty much exactly the same, weird out-of-place lizard spaceships and all, but now it's actually remembered by more than half a dozen people as a cult classic.
