Sure you're right. I've never attempted to play for the sole purpose of scoring in most Cave games in general. An exception being Espgaluda II but I'm bad so that doesn't matter.

Maybe so, but despite the difference in games like Espgaluda, while they are fun to an extend mind you, it still just feels like a "cave shooter". I guess mentally an exception can be drawn naturally Deathsmiles or ESP Ra. De and Akai Katana.

But when you get to games like Ketsui, Ibara (or "i want the garegga audience), Daifukkatsu, Mushihimesama, Muchi Muchi Pork I know they have differences at the level they're supposed to be played (for scoring). When I want to play a shmup I'm simply looking for something different. I'll throw Salamander 2

in and have infinitely more fun than if I went back to running Espgaluda. I've been playing that and Border Down on and off for years and will probably still be playing Border Down by the time most people stop playing shmups in general.
