Nah, it's got a charming simplicity to it and a nice atmosphere to it. No other Zelda game has been able to match the feeling of adventure that it had.

Zelda II is also fantastic, but I prefer the first game.

For nearly 15 years this game was my master. Every time I tried to beat it, I was instead beaten mercilessly into submission. I always loved the game though, how complex the combat got, the leveling system, the magic, everything. But two months ago my friend and I decided we were finally going to conquer Zelda II, and for two weeks we put our collective skills to the test, trading off each time one of us died. It was great, we would curse and yell, we would shout for joy at our small victories, laugh at the brutally insane difficulty, all the while we got better and better. We even did a two-man cartography mission to map out the Thunderbird temple with paper and pencil. And when we finally beat the game, I can honestly say I've never felt such an intense feeling of victory from a videogame before. (Admittedly, we straight-up could not beat Dark Link, so we used the crouch cheat, but that's not the point.)

The point is, the game is so face-meltingly hard it's almost stupid at times, but every single challenge is possible to overcome without injury, it's up to the player to adapt to the game. You really don't see that these days, save for glimmers of hope like Demons's and Dark Souls.

Also, this game has my favorite music out of any Zelda. The way the final song reminds you of the beginning, yet tells you that your victory over Gannon is a final one, is amazing. God damn this game is so good.

I think the official timeline is a horrible idea and it takes away from the self-contained world and magic of each game that isn't explicitly tied to another one in the series.

That said, play Zelda II because it's the best game in the series. No other Zelda will give you the amount of satisfaction and accomplishment you feel after beating each trial because the game actively wants to make you lose. Also, it has the most heroic ending music out of all of them, especially considering your victory against Ganon is a final one.

It really doesn't. I remember playing tons of games as a kid (on the original consoles at first, but around 2000 got an NES emulator from my cousin's family and have preferred them since), but my nostalgia pretty much ended before my teenage years.

A lot of times when I go back to playing a certain game, it's nowhere near as good as I remember.

It improved on the formula set down by Dune II, had a fun campaign (coming from someone who usually hates campaigns; the cheesy FMVs really added a lot to the game) and really raised the bar for vidya music.

I remember playing Tiberian Sun back in the day and thinking it was pretty neat, but in hindsight it wasn't that good of a game. It feels too slow (mostly due to the sluggish pace of tiberium harvesting), the combat felt less intense (the last time I played it most of the units seemed noticeably underpowered), and it didn't really deliver on the hype. Also, that deformable terrain was a pain in the ass.

2) Majora's Mask


Both were incredibly rewarding games for different reasons. In "Adventure," most of the game you were mercilessly punished by pretty much everything, but if you tried hard enough you could overcome it all. You had limited combat abilities and you had to become really good at fighting in order to beat any temple past the 2nd one. Also, it's the only game in which Link actually says something.

I'd rather they'd done a more cartoony vibe for a different series to be honest. There's plenty of high fantasy games and cartoony games on the market, but competent dark fantasy, the type that was popular in the 80s is kind of underrepresented. And it's not like Zelda can't be both, it's just that it hasn't been like the first two games for a long time now.
