Let me first admit that when it comes to the Sonic Adventure games, I have some serious rose colored glasses. The Dreamcast was (and is) my favorite system and I've always enjoyed Sonic games in the least "autistic" way possible.
I think Sonic Adventure 2 was a better game overall, but I enjoyed the first one more. I think a lot of that had to do with the hub world(s), the great Chao feature (which got better in the second game), and the Lost World Sonic stage is still one of my favorite all-time Sonic levels. The music was great, and since I was around 10 or 11 when it was released, I was all about the "3D is the greatest thing to happen to video games" attitude.
I have played both games somewhat recently and still had a lot of fun. Honestly, the Big the Cat levels still didn't bother me too much (even though I know they're totally out of place), but I still hate the casino level and I still didn't like the final Super Sonic boss battle that much. Aside from those flaws, the voice acting, cutscenes, and story wasn't great, but just like with Resident Evil, it never bothered me too much since I was really in it for the gameplay.
>tl;dr I enjoyed both games a lot, but preferred the first, and openly admit that my rose-colored glasses make me overlook the glaring flaws.
