pic related is one of my favorite things in SMB3.
When you first encounter them, you sense danger. They're new assets that never appeared before, and they're on an empty room, in one of the game's weirdest levels. You think they're going to electrocute you, or something, but then, nothing happens. It's just lamps.
I still avoided touching them always as a kid, only found out they don't actually do anything later on.
