Agreed. Other than sensible things like doing variations of wall and floor/ceiling textures, you can also combine it with shaders and frame-by-frame skin animations on static models to do things like the track textures scrolling in webm related

One feature I would really like to have though is a "mask" alpha blend mode, one that desaturates the patch and uses its color as the alpha of whatever is behind it. So you could cut transparent holes in textures, for adding windows to opaque wall textures for example.
