In hexen magic is MECHANICALLY the same as a gun. It challenges the player the same way and achieves the same goal. The differences are in theme, not mechanics.

In Dragon Quest a 3 man party is MECHANICALLY the same as a 4 man party, the game is turn based, balanced around the sum total of the stats the player is expected to have, and they manage the same resources in the same way. The difference is in balance, not mechanics.

A jump is not MECHANICALLY the same as shooting a projectile, you stupid ass. Especially because in Snowbros you're encouraged to shoot as much as possible but in Mario jumping all the time will flip enemies back right side up. It's a totally different challenge that creates a totally different game.
