Well they were two full-length games. The lock-on was just an added bonus. The only reason they did it is because it was too big to fit on one cart. It's not like Sonic 3 alone is half the size of the other two. Even then, what they did would be considered episodic, like Sonic 4. I guess in that sense it does bother me that it's considered shameful.
