Why did gamepads overtake joysticks? Were they inherently more ergonomic for 2D games?

First analog experience? Games on the Apple //e.

Actually, the Atari 5200, but we don't like to talk about that.

IBM & Apple II used analog joysticks, but had different sized connectors. The IBM sticks used a 15-pin DB plug, Apple used a 9-pin (for the //e and onward, II and //plus only had a 16 pin socket on the motherboard for game controllers.) Joysticks either came with a two-tail plug so you could use the corresponding one for your computer, or an adapter cable.
