Purism and nostalgia aside, for best possible experience: original or All-Stars?

Hey /vr/. I was born into a very strict Christian family and grew up without computers, video games, or anything of the sort.
As a kid, I always wanted to play video games, and on occasion I was able to sneak out and play Super Mario Brothers 3 at my friend's home.
Playing that game really helped me escape from my life at home. But after a few months of sneaking out, my parents found out what I was up to and grounded me from spending time with my friend.
Since then many years have passed, and I've finally moved out of my house to go to college. I've been accepted into my first job, and will have enough money to buy a video game very soon.
I'm not really knowledgeable in the world of video gaming, but I imagine there are essential titles any new gamer should play.
What games would /vr/ recommend to a new gamer?

Specifically on Mario 3. The p-wings.

I love that game but it's a pretty clunky port of an arcade game. I love it for its challenge, but a "god tier" game should be practically perfect. Of course, we all already know those games.

I beat this game without realizing I could wear suits, I was so confused why everyone was calling this game a masterpiece it just seemed like bland junk compared to the earlier games in the series.

This game is fucking shit.

I think this game can be very fun and has some brilliant moments, but it also has some issues.

For one thing, the levels are too short and the game overall is too easy. I think it has little replay value since the game can feel like a chore due to how easy it is.

Also, the airships at the end of each world are awful. They are painfully slow. In all the other levels you have this amazingly controlled Mario, but these levels just chug along and are unbelievably boring.

Finally I think the world kind of lacks in charm. It has its moments (some cool parts in the sky world) but overall the atmosphere just feels kind of "meh" to me. I don't find it as absorbing as other Mario titles. It kinda just feels like I'm playing through a bunch of levels and not a world, if that makes sense.

Thoughts? How do you feel about Mario 3?

The virtual console on the 3DS is coming out with this pretty soon. Anyone else wish they would release the SNES version instead of the NES version? Also how come there are no SNES games on the virtual console? Nintendo hates money?

So I finally managed to beat this game, after many, many tries. Every time, I just warped straight to World 8 and attempted to beat it with only 4 lives. And I finally did it. Hard as heck, but it was really fun.

It's funny because at this point I would probably find some parts of world 8 easier than the other worlds, simply because I've done them over and over.

How long did it take you to beat Mario 3? Did you usually beat it by playing through the whole thing, or warping?

Is it weird if I found this game more difficult than Lost Levels? I feel like Lost Levels was more about memorizing the levels and knowing what to do, while SMB3 requires more precise timing and it's harder to avoid/beat enemies.

Super Mario Brothers 3. Pathetic, I know, but I got to World 8 and couldn't get past the 8-1. Then I lost my save ;_;

Thoughts on Super Mario Bros. 3? I often hear how it's the best Mario game of them all. I'm just starting to play it and the controls seem really tight and perfect (well that's a given). Sucks how you can't really save though...

Also what's better, the NES original or the remake for all-stars
