Maybe when Quest was still a thing you could argue that he made good games, though you have to try really, really hard to ignore how every single one of them were horribly fucking broken on a mechanical level (more than your average FF, which is an accomplishment in its own right) and full of pointless mechanics that literally do not matter even if you try really hard to make them matter, but at the very least he released complete games because the Quest people had actual self respect and drive to make good games.
What the fuck did he do when Quest was absorbed by Square?
FFT is a retread of LUCT, but a third of it, with less mechanical variety and somehow MORE problems.
VS is a half baked Brandish expy where literally nothing works as its supposed to work, there's literal leftover mechanics they forgot to take out which aren't mentioned anywhere and it's again, one third of what it's supposed to be, with a lot of hastily repurposed content and major plot points and characters that go absolutely nowhere.
FFXII ain't retro, but it's the same thing as VS, except that this time Matsuno has a breakdown and fucking leaves in the middle of development, so the execs desperately scramble to find somebody to save the sinking ship, and they pick Akitoshi Kawazu of all fucking people to pick for a FF.

Vagrant Story is the same as FFXV, an amazing tech demo for an engine and a testament to Square's graphic designers but a complete mess of a game.
It's amazing how reviewers gave it so many high scores at the time and praised the nonexistent depth of the gameplay, it does have Matsuno's greatest villain and some of the best JRPG music by Sakimoto but that's about it, the game's one big huge mess.

Depends, the vast majority of them offer you no real advantage over chaining or better, countering, on a fresh file, unless you mean those really strong BA like Swallow Slash, but those are far few and between in the whole set.
The only use for BA is for time attacks, most of which are already easy and can still be mostly solved by a good chainer abusing Raging Ache, and the very few enemies that have high chain resistances like Nightstalker.

Seems to me you guys haven't really gone deep in the rabbit hole, because VS' entire nuanced gameplay is completely invalidated by a handful of oversights.
Namely:

We all know this.
You can unlock this right after the minotaur by using the dummy in the save room, and since it does fixed damage based on the difference between max HP and current HP value it's alread a notch above anything else but other arts that ignore defense values like Phantom Pain, both of which also completely invalidate the PP concept, let alone needing any sort of buffs and debuffs, making most spells even more pointless
>Absorb/Reflect counters
These are all basic counters which again, ignore defense values and do percentage based damage, meaning they are amazing ESPECIALLY in a fresh file since enemies hit less and less the more NG+ loops you go through.
What most people don't know is that Absorb types negate KOs altogether because the HP restore calculation happens as a part of the total damage calculation, meaning that if you have 150 HP and the enemy does 200 damage the game will detract a 30% from that 200 and add it to the base 0 HP value you have from the first calculation, meaning that you will NEVER, ever die from damage in the game as long as you counter with an absorb.
Nothing in the game can kill you other than a harpy casting Banish(Magic Ward fixes this) or passive poison damage, not even falling into pits kills you because you will be locked at a minimum 1 HP threshold.

I play both on a CRT. And the majority of N64 looks like ass and runs like ass. Most games have framerates in the 20s and even later releases don't look as good as, say, Vagrant Story.

If you want you can try to patch together the pieces of Kildean Lore in VS with the other Ivalice titles.

I've tried several times over the years but I can just never get into this. It's definitely one of the prettiest PS1 games I've played and the story seems interesting but the gameplay just never clicked for me
