Some people are hopeless casuals and refuse to adapt to a different enemy, because it's largely a weak one, and when they bite the dust, they thus feel cheated.

A lot of people also somehow make the assumption that using cover ever is ugly and wrong, just because a lot of generic modern game feature inorganic cover mechanics as their core gameplay (and then assert this is good reasoning, in spite of strafing around a corner not being even remotely the same as pressing a contextual prompt that makes you sit statically behind a chest-high wall, because "COVER IS FOR COWARDS")
Dodging behind a pillar to avoid taking a face full of buckshot, is somehow not a good course of action, it's instead the dev's fault that all enemies aren't just throwing slow projectiles like imps.

Most of these people got into the game in more recent years, then because of exposure to terrible attempts at realistic shooters, and hearing fairytales about oldschool shooters, come into old games like Doom and Duke Nukem 3D, with warped expectations.

In short, if they'll gladly maneuver to put a baron of hell between themselves and a mancubus, to make fatty hit muscles, and watch muscles slap fatty's ass, or get into hiding when flameboi starts working his devil magic, why would they just as well not put level architecture between themselves and a zombie with a shotgun? Because they one way or another have the expectation that they shouldn't have to.

The SNES or 32X ports wish they had renditions as good as these.
