After reading up on how the BFG works, it seems janky as hell. Why not just have the flash's origin be the ball itself? If you nail a charging horde of monsters, they get zapped as it should, and if you miss with the ball, you get nothing. The only downside in the singleplayer sense is that it could be too easy to drop bosses without having to dance with them a bit.
