The Sega Saturn controller is the one I am most comfortable with. There are enough buttons to do most the old stuff and my execution with the D-pad is best. This is just in general, I'd use it, but if a game has alternate control methods, like twin sticks or something analog, I'll find something more appropriate.

I get a few, typically so I can enjoy multiplayer games with friends. I prioritize probably the Saturn more than others since the controller fits my hands so well. I used Sega Saturn controllers to play all sorts of other games on other systems too through adapters or emulation.

I have not tried those yet. I think the clear blue plastic is very nice looking. I am saving up to get one sometime around Black Friday/Cyber Monday.

>>7860094
They have an additional select button and the start button is "play" button shaped similar to stock Playstation controllers.

Is the Dualsense as good as the Saturn pad? Since the Saturn pad is great because my execution in games is most accurate with it. I know it has a lot of nice technology, but for 6-button fighting games, like those from Capcom, I prefer having the 3 over 3 layout instead of a diamond 4.

I wished the XYZ buttons were the same size as the ABC buttons. Even without that feature, it is my favorite controller.

That's the Puyo Puyo variation. I've been looking for the purple Darkstalkers one.

I am in agreement, my execution in the games I play are best with Sega Saturn controllers. The only thing I wish was the XYZ were the same size as the ABC buttons. I find its layout adaptable to map YZBC to the diamond shape 4-face button controllers too when emulating.

I've got a few that have not been used before. However,I have a few more that I've used a lot. My gaming left thumb callus is so large hard it starts scraping off a bit of the well where the D-pad sits on the lower right on Saturn pads' soft plastic over time. Once I could afford it, I do want to try out those new RetroBit controllers.

To be fair, I am looking for something $5 on amazon so I can avoid the shipping cost and test out the new clear USB Saturn controller. I just think it is a bit shady they would increase the base brice so they can claim 25% off instead of 20% off.

>What's your favorite retro controller (or controller designed for retro games, even if they are recent) and why?
Sega Saturn controller. I am very used to them for fighting games and can execute at an acceptable level with them. They are adaptable in emulating old games as I can use YZBC for the diamond formation like on SNES pads and they work great in MAME emulation.

>Would you change anything about it, and what exactly?
I wish the XYZ buttons were the same size as the ABC buttons.

>What is your least favorite controller?
Of what I have tried, a toss up between bootleg cheap imitation controllers and the Atari 2600 joysticks. They are very inaccurate to inputs and feel bad to me.

There are the Playstation Saturn controllers that have select buttons. The Saturn controller has enough buttons by default for most of my emulation needs.

SNES = I use YZBC for the Super Nintendo's face buttons, L&R are matched, X&A are start and select.

MAME = Saturn face buttons are buttons 1-6 (enough for 85% of games), L to insert credit, R to pause MAME, and start button for start! If I opt to use the Playstation Saturn controller, I use the select button to take a screencap.

NeoGeo/MVS = varies depending on game, some use only 3 buttons, some I like to map punches on top kicks on bottom, for a rare case which I've not encountered which may need 4 buttons across I can opt to use AXYZ or ABCR.

Genesis maps 1-to-1, more than enough buttons for all portables, PCE, and NES.

N64 - I'd use another controller with an analog stick, but with the AKI Wrestling games, I do use the Sega Saturn pad. L&R for L&R, XYBC for the C direction buttons, X mapped to N64 B, and A is still A. Start is matched. For the taunts to activate the spirit meter, I don't mind mapping the analog directions to the keyboard directions.

I also like a lot of modern controllers too for emulation if I need twin sticks or the analog triggers for pedals. The Hori EX2 and Wii-U pro controller are pretty good for emulation to me.

>>4700495
It is my favorite. Probably the best I can execute in fighting games.

Since I am very familiar with the real ones, no. For most others, I think the shape on its own may be alright for a budget. I am eagerly awaiting RetroBit's USB releases of the pad and I hope they are up to the quality of authentic SLS ones.

I prefer the Saturn controller for 2D games because the D-pad is accurate for my hands. The 3 over 3 layout works for many fighting games, the 3 horizontal buttons can be used for original Genesis games, the YZBC buttons can be configured to be the diamond formation of SNES buttons, and there's still the L&R buttons which makes up for the lack of them on the Genesis 6-button controllers.

I think what is most important is finding a controller which works best for each person. I want harmony between my eyes, brain, hands, and the game. With average sized hands, the Saturn controller works best for me. It is robust enough for me, in terms of features, for emulation that do not require analog sticks. Sure there are more comfortable controllers out there, but it is already nice enough.

It depends on the game. For the majority of games/systems that Saturn pad is best for me. Super Nintendo, Genesis, most MAME games, NES, NeoGeo Pocket, Gameboy (Color & Advance), PC-Engine, Master System, Game Gear, Wonderswan, etc. all suitably work great. I primarily use the YZBC buttons for diamond shaped face buttons.

Some N64 games that use the d-pad like WrestleMania 2000 or No Mercy I just map YZBC to the C directions, and the analog stick (for taunts) I can use the keyboard.

However it gets tricky for games and systems that require analog inputs (or dual joysticks like Smash TV). That's what I have more modern controllers for.

I love using the Saturn pad, but there are some minor things that keep it from perfection. I wish the XYZ buttons were the same size as the ABC buttons and the D-pad rests inside a recess that I wish was bigger. As I use my crappiest one currently (the sunbaked one on the lower right) and with my thumb callus built up and hardened from all the games I play, I start to shave off a bit of plastic just to the down-right of the D-pad (visible on my overused sunbaked pad). Also, the PS2 versions of it does add a nice extra button with the select button so it works well as a screenshot button for emulation.

Yes, this. The Saturn pads are my choice controller. My only wish was to have the XYZ buttons match the size of ABC.

>>4144317
Actually on the SNES Street Fighter games, when you are in the options to set your buttons, if you just hit a button on "set" instead of going thought the buttons individually, it automatically sets the buttons to that exact layout for those sticks.

>>4144343
The joystick feels like a cheaper Seimitsu. It has a square gate and clicks at the 4 directions, but feels a little more loose/gentle to me. The buttons is nowhere near arcade Sanwa nor Seimitsu sensitivity, but not NES advantage membrane-like feel. I actually think they feel good, not actual arcade like but not bad as this video portrays (skip to 02:40 for the button internals) https://youtu.be/l8nZcWVTNbI

I wish I had devil robot hands, but I could never transition to stick. I prefer to use the Sega Saturn controller for almost all my emulation needs. I find the YZBC buttons map to the familiar diamond shape of SNES face buttons or N64 C-buttons well. The six face buttons, while I wish the XYZ are the same size as the ABC buttons, works great with Street Fighter games, Genesis, and of course Saturn games. Even in MAME, I can use the L&R for insert coin and start, with the start button for pause, and still have enough face buttons for most games.
