Ayyyyy
Redirect your thanks to ZikShadow on YT tho. If it wasn't for his run of this map with Hideous Destructor I wouldn't've heard about it either.

It started as a rather cozy little event. Some guys on old ratty couches, bantering and trying to speedrun. Snark, distractions, joy and agony, all the little moments that come with sitting with a group of friends and putting forth massive effort on stuff that doesn't ultimately matter. It was fun, even if you weren't a huge gamer, or even liked speedrunning much.

It shifted into a big event, and by various means was reforged into a increasingly clean and sanitized version of Nerd Culture, with more and more scripted moments and jokes, until it felt like watching a sitcom more then anything else. Still joy and pain, and real skill on display, but with a dryer, more offputting frame.

Now, for some reason, it's become a flagship for good, progressive, and correct Gamer and Nerd Culture. Odd, and often surprisingly authoritarian rules pop up almost hourly, work is done more to detail political correctness then skill, and it feels more that the community is more the focus then the games, now. That they're just the pegs to hang this culture on.

It's sad, but it'll decline over the next 5-10 years, and reform elsewhere the same way it formed the first time. Sad, but the pop culture circle of life.

Ok, let's set aside the accusation of cheating. He legit got his scores, fine. We'll ignore other Twin Galaxies royalty that was outed as well, Billy legit got the scores he says he did. The bigger issue, and the one most people have, is that he lied. he lied and he kept lying even when caught, and refused to own up to it, let alone apologize. The most he came to was a half-assed "i'm sorry if you're upset" sort of cop-out.

It's less about the scores, and more about the fact that it was proven Billy got his scores on an emulator. There's also no goddamn issue with playing on an emulator, they have their own section on the site, and still have pretty exhaustive rules about what is and is not allowed. If Billy had just said, from the start, that he'd gotten things on emulator, then he'd still have his scores now.

Billy is an egotist of no small degree and there's more prestige, such as it is, for playing the actual arcade machines. He wanted people, just like you, to gently stroke his ego for being so amazing, and didn't feel he could get that with an emulator. He likes to lie when it's convenient, especially if it makes him look more awesome. In King of Kong, he passes off a casual lie apropos of nothing. He goes on about how his handle used to be "USA" on highscore tables, because he had so many multinational friends and wanted to represent, which is why he wears his flag tie as well. In reality, he started doing that in 1999 because some guy he was against wore a canadian flag like a cape and he wanted a good gimmick as well.

Billy lied, was caught, doubled-down, and refused to admit or apologize for anything. His scores mean little, now, he's an asshole and people don't like his arrogance.

That was kinda what a big chunk of 3 was supposed to be. Still salty at capcom for that shit.

>MML 1 and 2
>Slightly under the radar, but become fan/cult hits
>2 ends on cliffhanger
>capcom is basically silent on the series, mentions lack of interest and new directions occasionally
>rabid fans push, petition, and finally start chomping in to other franchises to get 3 made
>capcom finally makes an effort, says it's going to allow a lot of fan involvement
>actually means fans are going to make it while we supervise
>lets a year of this churn, community cranking along hard, even in the pre-patrion/kickstarter days
>capcom makes announcement
>because there's not enough demand and too little work is being done they're gonna scrap everything.
>No deposit, no return, it's our IP so eat shit

>later, independent team tries to pick up the pieces
>works for a couple years, makes headway
>a few months out from a full beta release
>capcom delivers cease and desist
>their last comment on the MML franchise
>still happy to use art and such from it for promos
