It's by far one of my favorite consoles of all time, such good hardware for its time, and with a nice library to match. I'm aware most of the library it has also came out on Game Gear, but I disagree it takes away from the quality, looking at the titles it has by themselves it's solid, that's all that really matters, especially looking back since they had a different role, one at home, the other portable.

Also, usually Master System has a resolution that allows me to see more, so I usually prefer it. Sure a lot of the library are inferior ports too, but that simplicity has it's charm to me, a stellar console.

I'd say that Master System has a very strong library, its main issue was having the NES as its major competitor, that's a death sentence really, but overall it did well and if you had one, either on Europe or South America, since US didn't really get many releases, you'd be well off.

>The Sega Master System is pretty cool no?
Yes, it is.

It doesn't get as much love as it should because the NES was its major competitor and that's the most important console of all time for most, its library is unmatched, and that's tough to go up against... anyways, while the hardware was a bit better on the Master System, the library was a lot weaker, which is why it's not as beloved, but this console doesn't get enough credit for the hardware and library it had, and while I know it didn't have a great library in the US, in Europe and South America it was different, almost all titles SEGA made for Game Gear got a port too.

As a result, there's a lot of good stuff for their Master System even late into the 90's, which can take advantage of that good hardware, and the versions of Master System often were better if compared to their handheld counterparts due to the better resolution, you just can see more and it's helpful, it also had many good exclusives, it's one of my favorite consoles even today, stellar.

This. It's ridiculous how, just because the NES at the time had a better library, the Master System suddently has no worth or something, it's one of the best consoles ever made, with strong titles in it that hold up even today, especially if you count the stuff released only in Europe and Brazil, as it didn't get all that many releases in the US/JP due to poor sales. It's a good machine, give it a shot.

I'm a big fan of the Master System, so I do this all of the time... jokes aside, the Master System had a ton of ports of stuff that was better on Genesis and SNES, but a few times it actually had a better version than those, and especially to the NES lots of the time, so it's a stellar console and library to me even today, I can't recommend it enough, it's got a ton of subpar ports, but lots of good ones.

I agree when it comes to ports that are nothing but an 8-Bit version of a Genesis title, but for its own arcade ports for stuff that didn't come out on Genesis, like Rastan, or titles that differ from the Genesis one by a lot, like Batman Returns, I'd say the Master System stands on its own and has one of the better libraries in the history of the industry, it did it's job well enough at the time.

What I'm trying to say is that, sure, often you'd have versions worse than arcade or Genesis, but if all you had was your Master System, you'd still be in a good spot, with tons of good stuff to play.

I disagree, Master System had a lot of ports from Genesis/SNES/NES that were unique and at times manage to be the superior version, or at least be worthwhile experiences because of just how the differences make it their own thing that players might actually prefer depending on what they're more into. It's worse than Genesis, SNES and NES overall, but it's a solid library and worth playing.

Aladdin
Batman Returns
Bonanza Bros.
Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse
Ghostbusters
Ninja Gaiden
Predator 2
The Lion King
Rambo
Rampage
Rastan
Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Superman: The Man of Steel
TECMO World Cup Soccer '93
World Cup Italia '90

I mean, this is just the stuff I can recall out of the top of my head, and only the stuff that was on a few other platforms, where the Master System's version managed to stand out, a few examples.

I haven't even mentioned the stuff that's only on Master System and/or Game Gear, the list gets a lot bigger then, it's not a huge library, but one I think is worth playing through, a lot of solid stuff.

I'd say most of the ports for Master System have no right being as close to to their 16-Bit versions on its 8-Bit hardware, it's just a superb console...

Both are correct, NES was 10x more important due to its superb library, the Master System had impressive hardware and some of its titles look almost 16-Bit like, same for the Game Gear, but the library's not as strong, despite still being good in its own way, with a ton of classics too.

I see, well, a lot of the Master System's library is quite bad, but I'd say that goes for the NES too, I know many think of the Atari days as shovelware reigning supreme, but the 8-Bit era was also full of... here are some of the Master System's best:

Aladdin
Alex Kidd in High-Teck World
Alex Kidd in Miracle World
Alex Kidd in Shinobi World
Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars
Alien Storm
Alien Syndrome
Altered Beast
Asterix
Asterix and The Great Rescue
Asterix and The Secret Mission
Ayrton Senna's Super Monaco GP 2
Aztec Adventure
Batman Returns
Bonanza Bros.
Bubble Bobble
Castle of Illusion
Deep Duck Trouble
Dynamite Headdy
Golden Axe Warrior
Land of Illusion
Legend of Illusion
Lion King
Lucky Dime Caper
Master of Darkness
New Zealand Story
Ninja Gaiden
Phantasy Star
Shinobi
Rastan
Sonic 1
Sonic 2
Sonic & Tails
Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin
Streets of Rage
Streets of Rage 2
Wonder Boy
Wonder Boy in Monster Land
Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon's Trap

I hope this helps! A lot of good stuff in here.

I think most SEGAfags grew up with Genesis and not Master System, especially in the US, the few places Master System is still mostly remembered are Europe and South America, in North America and Asia it didn't even come close to Nintendo's dominance. In the US especially, Genesis was the big one, Dreamcast felt like a revival due to the amazing launch it had, and Saturn was the hyped console due to the Genesis' success, but that in the end didn't live up to it besides Japan, Master System's always in the background, but it's really deserving of more attention than it gets here...

So much good stuff... it's a library I play often, it feels quite similar to the Game Gear one, which I also love, but often with a screen resolution that allowed me to see more, and that was quite an awesome thing for me, often the definitive version is the Master System one, for me at least.

I absolutely adore this thing.

>I'd say 3rd gen is very strong too but also very one-sided with Nintendo.
I think it terms of sales and legacy, also public memory and popularity back then in markets like Japan and the US, so the main ones, it definitely feels one sides, but the Master System was not too far behind in Europe and South America, of course those are smaller markets, but it had its own legacy and overall a solid library, with many multiplatform titles having a better version on it than on NES. NES was a superior system with a much more iconic library, for sure, but Master System was a fantastic console that often gets overlooked I think.

I believe the Master System is somewhat underappreciated due to it not doing well in the main markets, in this case the USA and Japan, because they were dominated by Nintendo at the time, however it was a solid system all around, and if you talk to people from regions like Europe or Brazil, in which it was the console who sold better, they remember it fondly. I'd say that the NES had the better library overall, but the Master System is a classic system that you can't go wrong with. I know most people love the way the original model looks better, but I have a soft spot for the 2nd model.
