That's Mario, replacing Jumpman; tge name Pauline only showed up in other merchandise for some reason. Funny thing is the Japanese audience didn't hear of Pauline until the Game Boy game so a ton of people mistakenly thought the OG and redesign were separate characters until Nintendo had enough and politely screamed at them to knock it off in the mid-2010's.

They already started calling Jumpman "Mario" as soon as Donkey Kong Jr., but there's some truth to the Lady/Pauline thing - while "Pauline" soon became her name in the west, that name was only applied to her Game Boy redesign in Japan, so a lot of fans who didn't have any context for her western name origin somehow thought she was a new character altogether. It didn't help that Japanese third-party licensors didn't know either, and so you get oddities like Lady/Pauline having two profiles on the same page or manga where the old Lady was established would now have the new Pauline without acknowledging it. It had to wait until 2014 when Nintendo decided to clarify that they were the same character in a Smash Bros. trophy of all things, which was supported in Odyssey references.

For what it's worth, that book that apparently interpreted Lady and Pauline as separate characters says that they're from New York in their profile, the real difference between them being that Lady's personality is "docile" and Pauline's is "vigorous" whatever that means.

>That almost lines up with his cartoon origin of being from New York
That was something Miyamoto came up with for Mario Bros., believe it or not, and Pauline was retroactively said to be from there so presumably it applies to Donkey Kong as well. New York=Big-City=Big Ape City=New Donk City.
