BTW - another fun fact about that whole scene : so Laguna&co are abruptly sent to war even though they didn't expect it. It is also said that Major Caraway become Major soon after those events (because it is said that he gets together with Julia soon after those events to reconfort her from never seeing Laguna again, and that during that same period he became Major).

Remember that one soldier with a red costume in the bar that's VERY jealous when he sees Laguna go with Julia in her room?

Well, in you put 2 and 2 together, you can guess that that soldier was Caraway (who wasn't general yet, as it is said) who used his connections (after all, he was ABOUT to become general) to send Laguna on war, far away from Julia, so that he can be with her and have her for himself.
It totally worked too.

So that was never SAID in the game, that's how storytelling in FF8 is, it's subtle, you have to add several pieces of informations you get at different moments to understand that; and then some people say there is nothing to "get".
