The way they did it in doom (and I doubt it changed much, if it all, for quake), was they only recorded your movements and the game took care of the rest.

Doom is deterministic, meaning if you did the exact same inputs every single time (like a demo does), the game would play out exactly the same. That's because enemy movements, behaviour, damage numbers (both given and taken) pull from the same table of randomly ordered numbers. This table is hard coded into the game and doesn't change. Every time you start a new level the game starts taking values from the beginning of the table, which is how things remain consistent.

Pickups work because all a demo does is change the source of inputs from the mouse and keyboard to the demo file. Gameplay logic is not affected.

By the looks of it, it's a startup by people from other studios. RCT:W is the only game listed as what they've done, but they have an internship program which assumes they've done more.
After a bit of digging, it looks like they mainly deal with online & mobile stuff, so I can assume that the 'next phase' is the online implementation and such.

Huh?

How is saying that people won't get scared from a videogame like they were when they were seven something "badass"?

I'm not saying like whoa man I'm so hardcore cause doom doesn't scare me, I'm saying that if someone is trying to find a doom wad or even any videogame that is going to really and truly scare them and not just make them jump with jumpscares or just have tension (which is great in a game, but not the same thing as being scared) then they're probably going to be disappointed.

The reason for the seven year old comment is because I too was scared by certain videogames when I was younger, and then when I grew older tried to find games that would have the same effect on me but it turned out to be a fruitless endeavor. It sucks. It's a shame. But that's the way it is sometimes.
