In retrospect this was such an oddity in the Mario series. The way it was being advertised made it seem like an actual sequel to Mario 2, with screenshots showing mecha Birdo and Peach lifting a giant mushroom etc. Then when I got it it was basically Mario 2 with All Stars graphical assets except they completely redesigned the sprites. The game just seemed really unusual in so many ways. What was your impression of this game at the time?
