Why are retro single player games so repetitive? Didn't they know how to program indeterminacy, rng, and procedural levels back then? Look at ninja gaiden, gradius, final fight, captain commando, mega man, all that garbage is so boring once you know the enemy spawns....

Rpgs escaped this problem because they offer different characters and paths to take. And a story and gameplay style that doesn't reward mindless save state grinding. But arcade style games fell dead because of mindless repetitive levels over and over.
