that's fine man, the philosophy is all largely the same, gameplay, art, level design, whatever. Working within a set of rules to design new and interesting scenarios with them and then understanding those rules well enough to know when it's okay (and beneficial) to break them.
Even if it's not an fps you know like you said you forgot why you started, for me it was just wanting to acquire some creative skills using a medium I enjoy. I like trying to design interesting encounters for people to approach and sometimes that person is just me because I'm still learning how to be better at it. It sounds like your problem is less about modding and "getting the work done" and more like finding out how you want to spend your time in life. All the best. I'm not gonna tell you everything is going to be okay or some shit like that, but at least you're still thinking about it.
