>Surely the seething fanbois that hadn't been born yet distinctly recall much earlier arguments on the subject between their uncles who worked at Nintendo.

I was 10 when the Super Nintendo came out. Nobody was calling that 'third generation' back then. To most people, it was 'the second gen', and the 2600 was the first. But there wasn't any real classification. When the Genesis came out it was marketed as 'the leader of the 16bit generation' or whatever. Or 'the first true 16bit home console' when it was advertised up against the TG-16. In retrospect; that was challenged by Atari and other companies. The Jaguar was '64bit' because of some components in the machine. When the 3DO came out it was advertised as the first true 32bit CD system (in the western market). Atari would advertise that the 3DO is 32bit and their system is 64bit.

>Do yourself a favor and stick with the X68k version if you have to play a home conversion for some reason.

Nobody outside of Japan owned a X68k back then. Strider on the Genesis was ported by Sega of Japan, back when Capcom wasn't a Sega third party developer due to licensing contracts with Nintendo. For a 1990 release it was given a lot of claim for being pretty close to the arcade game overall. But t was also $10 to $20 dollars more than other Genesis carts (aside from Phantsy Star II) because it was a 1MB cartridge. I ended up getting the game for like $20.00 a few years after the fact and I think it's still great overall. The PS1 port of Strider that is included with Strider 2 for the PS1is much closer to the arcade game.

>The first home console game on a cart that hit 1MB was Strider for the Mega Drive/ Genesis. That was released in 1990. Sega made a big deal out of that in the marketing. Sega ported Strider themselves and published the game. The first game to be 2MB was Street Fighter 2 on the SNES in 1992. That was a big deal.

Though, Sega actually didn;t advertise the game as 1MB, they advertised it as 8MEG's, or 8Megabits. But 8Megabits equals 1Megabyte. They liked using bits, because it made the numbers look more impressive.

>Fucking Nintendo fooled me.

In Nintendo's defence, their advertisement of "MEGS" was a response to Sega's constant bragging of cartridge sizes. Like Strider for example, which came out in 1990, and actually was the first 1MB game cartridge. Though Nintendo did release Act Raiser on the Super Famicom months later in 1990, with a 1MB cartridge. Though in 1991 with the Neo-Geo and Neo-Geo games being 40-50Mb or higher.

>It came out 3 years after the Genesis launched

They already had Strider as their Genesis/ Mega Drive tech demo for 1990. Sonic the Hedgehog was still released in North America to compete directly with the launch of the Super Nintendo and Mario World. It was Sega soft rebooting the system as an attempt to stay in the market after the release of the SNES, and it worked.

The MD/ Genesis port of Strider was praised for being 'arcade perfect' by gaming magazines back in 1990. But, it;s still missing audio clips, missing some BG tiles, and a bit of animation. Also, the arcade game runs at a higher horizontal resolution, you can see more left and right. But has the same 320 vertical resolution. Strider was also ported to the PS1 (not emulated), and was included as a bonus disc with Strider 2:

It's pretty arcade accurate. But also has a remixed soundtrack option.

In 1990, Sega releases Strider on the Genesis/ Mega Drive and claims that it is the first 8MEG! cartridge. Or 1MB.

>Yeah that game may be the only reason why you should ever own a genesis.

Considering that the Genesis/ Mega Drive port came out one year after the CPS1 arcade game, it was an impressive port. Sega was hyping it as their biggest cartridge size for the time. But the game was still missing some audio and background tiles and maybe some frames of animation. The arcade game does also have a wider screen resolution, 368x224, while the 16bit Sega port displayed at 320x224. Which was still pretty close.
