It's a pointless question. 2D vs 3D is really just the display, it affects gameplay to a degree but good and interesting games can be made in either. Zelda is a perfect example where whether it's 2D or 3D doesn't really matter a whole lot in the end.

Also 3D games have existed almost as long as 2D so it's not a question of time. Some of the earliest games are vector based.

Point still remains though that when people think the game is choppy, they think it's shit.

I do totally agree with Goldeneye redefining fps games. It's not that I didn't think it was good. But you do understand why very few people still play it, right? The same with Pole Position. They're not bad games, but they are of a sort where once they get dated to a certain point there isn't as much reason to play them.

That's really all this whole aging thing is about. It's acknowledging that it's a process games go through. Some games, like Tetris are so good that there's little anyone can do to improve upon the original. Others like 3-Demon were amazing at the time (I certainly loved it) but as time goes on, the ideas in it were done so much better in later games.

I can't help you I guess. I liked Doom well enough back then when I played it on DOS but if I went back I wouldn't necessarily want to play it like that again. I'm not into shooters enough to know about the other stuff though.

I'm just here because there's a lot of old games still love. Not really expecting people to agree with me a lot. I gave up on that long ago.

>The 5th generation invented 3d

TFW I was playing 3D games before a lot of the people complaining about 3D coming along and ruining gaming were even born.

Don't waste your time debating that with him. You can lay out every major change in gaming history and show how it's been shifting constantly, but he will always insist 6th gen is some kind of magical permanent marker bigger than any other in all of video game history. I honestly think he has mental issues.

What about early 3D games? Retro or no?

>But hey, I'm also someone who thinks that the 16-bit era isn't retro.

Well there's your problem. The thing is that "retro" isn't a very specific term and we could have debates all day long about who's definition of what's retro is best or most correct and never come to a real consensus.

So for here, we have to think about what works for this board. Obviously they're not going to break it down into a separate forum for each generation. But they did want to give a place where threads about older games wouldn't get instantly buried.

So they arbitrarily picked systems from 1999 as the cut off date and called the board 'retro'. Whether these systems fit your personal definition of what's retro is really beside the point. It was really just done as a way of organizing the board and what they chose makes as much sense as anything to me. Dreamcast threads wouldn't really have another good place to go, but GBA is still popular enough that it does.

Personally I think most GBA games feel a lot more modern than Dreamcast ones.

Also, 3D in a game really isn't a signifier of whether it's retro or not. One of the first games I ever played was in basic 3D and it predated the NES.

That is pretty sweet. That was how I got all my old DOS games orrignally. Those first few napster years really were glorious though, I was working at a university at the time which had a crazy good connection (home was still 56k) and would download boatloads of crap every day. I miss the old internet...

I couldn't remember at all so I went digging and found it! The game was called 3Demon. This was it, not a great game but back then I thought it was super impressive.

I do play roguelikes now, I haven't gotten very into any of the really big complex ones like ADoM or IVAN though mostly because of a lack of time. It took me almost two years to really get good at POWDER which is one of my favorites because it's a straight dungeon crawl like Rogue was but with some really interesting systems.

I also really, really like Shiren the Wanderer. It was great after playing the DS port to go back and play the Super Famicom version and have even nastier surprises.

My first vidya ever.

I wonder if I can still get the Pascal source code by sending $25 to the address at the end of the game.
