Cables sometimes have a "memory", which is their tendency to coil a certain way after sitting in a warehouse of who knows how long. As a rule of thumb, you don't want to fight against that memory as it could potentially damage the internal wiring. Now I know controller cords don't tend to have memory, at least not to an extreme degree. Or maybe it's just a straight cord after years of being uncoiled. I can tell you that you don't want to coil them tight like OP's picture. Ideally you coiled them in a somewhat lose circle, like with this XLR cable.
