all games can become a virtual escape. shmups promote and reward habitual and repetitive behavior, doing the same routes over and over, rewarding you with coin collecting mechanisms and higher score.
There are people who play shmups 5-8hours a day doing the same levels and almost the same routes for years and years just to see small marginal improvements in their numbers going up.
Games don't need rpg elements to become addictive. Simply habitual, repetitive behaviour centered around increasing a score can become addictive, like mobile farming games.

In a way shmup players are farming score or clears, while rpg players are farming items and loot. But the escapism, habitual behavior and hypnotism that creates addictive behavior is all there.

I think shmups are addictive but in a hypnotic way. You do zone out as you play and lose track of time and you do get a high or rush when things go your way and your score improves or you get a nice clear. etc
