There's lots of ways to get cards easily, even without dueling. Even in Tag Force 1, which is the most limited, you get free cards just from showing up to class, and every once in a while you'll win the lottery and get a bunch of points for free.
In an extreme example, if you start with Rei/Blair in TF3 you can build an endgame-level deck within ten minutes of starting the game. It isn't even hard.
But having a bad deck at the start and slowly building yourself up with your deckbuilding skills and your grit until you're an untouchable god-king is the core of what makes Tag Force fun.
That, and dating all the babes, natch!

It isn't immediately obvious from the start, but Tag Force has a completely linear story and all of the games are connected.
The games are best played in release order, which is rough because Tag Force 1 is probably the worst. The character affection system is really obtuse.
QRD:
>Characters have two affection meters, one of them is invisible
>The visible one goes up when you duel them or give them presents
>The invisible one goes up if you talk to them at least once every day and goes DOWN if you don't
>The visible meter controls whether they will become your Tag Partner
>The invisible one controls whether they are nice or mean to you in dialogue
>Manjoume/Chazz and Kaiser/Ryou/Zane have unique mechanics on top of this
It's a fucking shitshow and was removed from later games.
Tag Force is a god damn marathon but it's also a one-of-a-kind journey. The length is both the best and worst part of it. You really build a bond with your partners and your cards over the course of the hundreds and thousands of hours of duels. It is a MASSIVE time investment though. If you have anything else you really want to play I'd get that done first, Tag Force is so long there's a non-zero chance you'll die before you finish it.
