Clearly Nintendo was planning on making a new game featuring DK on the SNES. But they gave it to Rare instead and retooled it to star Miyamoto's new favorite, Yoshi.

Also I don't much appreciate dumb /v/ zoomers bringing their Miyamoto venom in here. Guy's a legend, fuck off.

Literal SOUL.
Also Story has the misfortune of having an obtuse way to play through the game. It's disappointing as a sequel to Island, but when you actually judge it on its own, and not just on the initial 6 levels you can play on story mode, but all 24 levels and playing for score, it actually is a pretty interesting, experimental 2D sidescroller.

Literally heart and SOUL.
Really though, it probably has to do with the fact it was the last big profile SNES game the Mario team did before moving onto Super Mario 64. You can notice it was a super passion project, they went all out.
The sequels aren't bad games really, I even like Yoshi's Story, for all the shit it gets, it has a lot of unique stuff, but it's gonna be very, very hard to top a masterpiece like Yoshi's Island. It still stands as one of the best platformers of all time for me.

>How do you even create a spin off game which is better than the fucking main series?
by pouring your soul and heart into it

Yes, "You are super player!!" (or "You Are A Super Player!" in the non-Japan versions)
Also, not really the same, but pic related is pretty charming too.

When I got it at release, I actually think I got it before stores sold it in my country, I ordered it from a nintendo phone line and got it in the mail, like 1 or 2 days before my birthday. I remember I begged my dad to buy it for me, I think it was the only time he accepted to order something on the phone using the credit card.
Anyway, I eventually forgot about it, it took a month or so, but then the day came.
I was sleeping on a sunny morning when I hear the electric porter ringing, my mom picking up and going "What? a Mario game?". I remember jumping from bed, as I realized what it was.
Then I spend the following days playing it to death, on my bday party I had friends come over and we played the game for hours. I couldn't put it down.

I don't consider Yoshi's Island a main Mario game (even if it was titled SMW2 in the west and "Super Mario: Yossy Island" in Japan). Obviously it's part of the Mario universe and it has a lot of visual cues that reminds of other main Mario games (especially SMB2USA and SMW) but the gameplay is so fundamentally different that I find it hard to compare it to the main titles.
You know, kind of like Wario Land, its title was SML3: Wario Land, has visual elements that reminds of games like SMW and SML2, but it's clearly a spinoff, same with Yoshi's Island for me.

>I dare you find a flaw
I can't, really.

>More so it was because the actual platforming took a backseat to collecting.
Other than some of the cave levels which are maze-like, most levels in Yoshi's Island are pure platforming, the game doesn't force you to do the completion part, it's optional.
Give it another shot, and don't worry about collecting everything.
You're missing some really cool stuff if you quit half through.

What are some hidden (or not so hidden) messages from the devs to the player?

Sequels 95% of the time are made by imitators, not the original talent that made a game possible.

Yoshi's Island, no question about it, is the most technically impressive game on the SNES. It was essentially a tour-de-force of every last single hardware feature available on the SNES utilized in a variety of creative ways. It also incorporated the most advanced coproceesor available to the system, the SuperFX2. Knowing how to program the SNES has helped me appreciate what an accomplishment this game was.

So, when exactly has the Mario franchise jumped the shark?
