Don't try to waste your time sticking with the palete. Get messy. Use a black pencil with soft borders to add shadows and a think bright pencil to add details, then import to the wad and let Slade adjust the colors automatically. Don't be afraid of being filthy, because Adrian Carmack certainly wasn't. The messier it is, the more natural it will look.
