A game gear with new caps is worth at least $60 dude. I sold one for $60 recently and I could have sold it for more if it didn't have a dead pixel. I also just sold a recapped Game Gear with an LED backlight and new glass for $100 a few weeks ago and I'm probably going to be selling another soon.

A working game gear that doesn't have bad caps is generally worth about $30 but there's no knowing when the caps might go bad on it. If those caps die then you're going to have to pay someone to replace them anyway or do it yourself.

I just got done installing a handheld legend LED backlight on a Game Gear I recently acquired. I'd say if the Gameboy DMG backlight mod is easy, and the McWill Game Gear replacement screen is hard, this mod falls neatly in the middle at "medium." If you've already recapped a Game Gear it should be pretty well within your realm of difficulty, although cutting the diffuser brackets and getting everything to fit takes a lot of work.

If you never plan to run your GG on batteries then I'd still say the stock backlight works well enough. This mod isn't really worth it if you aren't in it for the improved battery life, but that's not to say by any means that it isn't a good mod.

The end result is very good. It's still really blurry, but the brightness looks more even aside from the hot spots at the top of the screen. For my own use I vastly prefer the McWill screen, but if that's too technical and expensive for you I'd say this is a solid alternative if you have the tools needed for it, and unlike the McWill screen this mod does increase the battery life by a significant margin, which I'd say is the best reason to use it.

So I just finished recapping one of the Game Gears I recently acquired, and I also added one of the Handheld Legend LCD backlights. Obviously not as impressive as the McWill replacement LCD, but it definitely looks more even than the flourescent tube, and the added battery life is certainly a plus.

Assembling everything is pretty awkward with the backlight mod. It's not as technically intense as the McWill mod for sure, but you still need to desolder a few things, and actually fitting it all together without getting fingerprints all over the screen is a bit of a pain. I'll probably be picking up more of these kits going forward since I'm planning to flip a some more Game Gears this year.
