Go for original versions for all of them. For Dragon Quest go for the NES versions, not Famicom.

and when you play the fan translation of a big RPG, always emulate, and always make savestate back ups or have the autosave option to at the very least save every hour.

Chrono Cross has awful gameplay.

If you actually want something to change your mind, and aren't just shitposting, go play pic related.
Or even just the NES/Famicom FF and DQ games.

>Square, Enix, and everything after that is a descending spiral of mediocrity.

says the guy who haven't even played them let alone the Squenix ones

>>10158258
You're underestimating the post DQ RPG craze. Just Capcom alone has 3 turned based RPGs + at least 1 A-RPG.
If we include all types of RPGs, I'm sure the count can easily reach 200.

I mean the map in MT1 is identical to MT2: rotating 3x5

and BTW this is probably why it rotates, so you can see more of the map depending on which direction you're facing. People who complain about the rotation fail to understand this, it's here to help you draw your map and then get your bearings when comparing with your map so you know where you are. Considering the cardinal direction is noted at the top of the map you can't really get lost

They're great, the second one is literally one of the best RPGs on the system, only issue is the first game gave me crashes starting from the mid game, but they do filter the casual.

yeah it's by culture brain alright and that sounds like the same series, the first one sounds like Super Chinese 1 aka Kung Fu Heroes and the sequel like Super Chinese 3. They probably just renamed it to "boy" for the game boy.

>>9626927
already played some time ago, played it before 1, which may explain why I didn't think 1 was too hard since I was in known territory. Although the tricks you can use in 2 to make the game easy don't work in 1.

>>9627069
I only used a walkthrough for directions when I didn't have a map or when there was something cryptic (not being able to enter a dungeon unless at a specific time of day); also to know what some items/spells do. Spell/item lists and a map were probably in the manual which I don't have; and I had not looked it up I'd have turned in round a lot more, and gotten more exp from random encounters, thus making fights even easier

They were popular though even on console. On Famicom alone I can name

Bard's Tales
Bard's Tales 2
Deep Dungeon
Deep Dungeon II
Deep Dungeon III
Deep Dungeon IV
Digital Devil Story - Shin Megami Tensei
Digital Devil Story - Shin Megami Tensei II
Might & Magic - Secret of the Inner Sanctum
Shadow Brain
Swords & Serpents
Wizardry
Wizardry 2

And there has to be more I'm unaware of. Sure, that's not nearly as many as the DQ style games, but it's still a lot. Japan loved Wizardry.

By playing the right ones. It's simple, difficulty of the genre as a whole kept going downhill with each generation (there are exceptions of course). So start with Famicom ones. As another anon pointed out, dungeon crawlers are a good bet; so go play Digital Devil Story - Megami Tensei II for a start (make sure to use the latest version of the latest translation patch), it can be pretty challenging at times at least until the mid to late game when you can start to break the game if you're smart.
