But I do agree with the spirit of your post. Mods for Quake like Quoth, Arcane Dimensions, and Drake are my favorite ways to play Quake because they fill out the roster the same way Doom II did for Doom 1 and then some. Quake II avoided this with a sizeable cast of enemies right out the gate, but Quake 1 didn't have such luck.

To tangent a little, none of this is to say Quake doesn't do fine with newly made vanilla maps with the base enemy roster, especially with progs_dump or Copper being as popular as they are, but it's incredibly difficult to not miss the additions. Edie, droles, minotaurs, imps, gaunts; and none of them feel out of place! The community did a good job with them.
