I guess the term is just underated,just that people played it,it just never actually make to the point of nostalgia nowadays or pop culture.
The biggest example of this is metal slug.I mean,among video game forums it's really regarded and all,but if we're talking average joe "gamer crowd" they had at least played 3 somewhere for 2 stages and never mention it again;
